Tahsis, situated at the head of a fjord (Tahsis Inlet)
on the west coast of Vancouver Island, takes its
name from a Mowachaht word, Tashees, meaning
"gateway or passage". At the end of Tahsis Inlet
we can spot a headland jutting out into the open
Pacific Ocean,. Friendly Cove. It was here in 1778
that Captain Cook first stepped ashore. Fourteen
years later Captain George Vancouver and
Governor Bodega Y Quadra met here to settle
ownership of the Pacific Coast.
Once you have returned to Tahsis you might wish
to enjoy some of our local rivers for a little
Steelhead fishing. This is truly world class fishing.
If on the other hand you don't wish to fish then just
take a quiet moment and relax beside one of these
peacfull rivers. If salmon fishing is your enjoyment
we can provide the very best. There are a number
of local charter operators available to take you out
for as little time or as long as you wish.

Except for the fur trade, this part of British
Columbia, remained unchanged until the
early 1900's when logging was introduced. This
forestry community at the head of Tahsis Inlet is
70km (43mi) northwest of Gold River on a gravel
road. It started as a floating logging camping the
1940's, which later became a permanent on-shore
camp. In the 1950's it expanded and a village took
shape. In 1972, the road from Tahsis to Gold River
was opened to the public, attracting new families,
housing and community facilities followed.
