Sointula, on Malcolm Island, is a short ferry trip from Port Mc Neill, along the East coast of Northern Vancouver Island. Arriving on Sointula is like going back a little in time. The town has a rich history, and artifacts from the community's colourful past can be found at the Sointula museum. This was originally a Finish settlement, Sointula means "harmony" in Finish, and you can still see that heritage today.
Bicycles can be rented on the island to explore along the 12 kilometres ( 7 miles) long Rough Bay - Kaleva Routeas well as a network of logging roads which provides access to other parts of the island. Kayak rentals are also available on the island to enjoy the solitude of local waters teeming with birds, seals, dolphins and otters.
There are camping spots and a Government campground at Bere Point, available at no charge. You could even see the whales rubbing themselves on the rocks, just off of Bere Point. Bere Point Regional Park has a beautiful beach and 12 camp sites with barbecues. Firewood is usually available, but there is no running water. The park leads to the island's newest hiking trail, the Beautiful Bay Trail. This trail winds along a ridge for three to four kilometres through a stunning rainforest with periodic glimpses of the sea below.
Fish for salmon, halibut, and cod in the local waters or take a guided sport fishing tour. Crab pots also yield their treasures. Charters are available for whale watching, diving, sight seeing and photography. If birdwatching is of interest be sure to stop by Rough Bay, the mud flats are a popular stopping point for a great number of bird species. Bald Eagles will also make their appearances to the lucky visitors.
